Military Glossary

Academic year
In the United States a school’s academic year usually consists of a fall and a spring semester and usually lasts from Labor Day to end of May or middle of June.

Admiral
Literally translated “commander of the seas” is the Admiral the highest rank in the navy.

Air Force
The military organization that primarily operates in air-based military operations. They typically use a combination of fighters, bombers, helicopters and other aircraft. The US Air Force was created in 1947 as a separate branch and has over 7,500 aircraft in their fleet.

Army
All land forces of a nation are described as the army. The US Army was formed in 1775 in conjunction with the Independence war.

Cadet
The word Cadet refers to an officer in training or more general to a person who is junior in some way.

Chaplain
A priest or a member of the clergy serving a group of people who are not in organized in a church. Chaplains are attached to a military unit.

Civil Engineering
As a broad field of engineering it deals with planning, construction and maintenance of fixed structures or public works such as roads, water supply and much more.

Colonel
It is a military rank in the army and air force and usually the highest below the general grades.

Employer
A person or an institution that hires employees or workers is called employer. He offers wages in exchange for the labor-power of this worker.

Ensign
The Ensign is the lowest rank in the U.S. Navy with the official grade O-1.

General
The highest rank in army and sometimes air force is called General. It is the equivalent to the navy term admiral.

Healthcare service
Soldiers of the U.S. military forces and their families receive medical and dental care at little or no costs.

High school diploma
A High school diploma is usually required for entrance into college or university. Most military schools offer the chance to achieve the High school diploma.

JAG
The Judge Advocate General’s Corps is the judicial arm of the United States armed forces

 Military basic training
Or Recruit training is the initial indoctrination and instruction given to new cadets. Besides of learning military values they learn how to stand, march and respond to orders in an unquestioning manner.

Navy
A country’s navy describes all the military forces designated for navel warfare. This includes surface vessels, submarine vessels and seaborne aviation. The United States Navy is a branch of the U.S. armed forces and consists nearly 300 ships and over 4000 aircraft.

Postgraduate
Quaternary education or postgraduate education is the fourth-stage educational level which follows the completion of an undergraduate degree at a college or university.

Retirement plans
U.S. military retirement plans help Veterans buy a home, purchase life insurance or find a job.

Salary
The word salary refers to a payment associated with a position over a fixed period of time such as per month or per year regardless of the actual hours worked.

SEAL
Navy SEALs (SEa-Air-Land) handle Special Operations and Counter-Terrorism missions. SEALs are famous for their special equipment, techniques and tactics.

Troubled teens
Youth who came in contact with violence, drug use or do show a very bad behavior.

West Point
The United StatesMilitaryAcademy in West Point, New York is a former Army fort and now military academy with a more than two centuries long tradition.
