Job specification

The military hired the services of Quartermasters and Boat Operators to direct the piloting and navigation of small water crafts such as barges, tug boats, and gun boats. These boats are used for amphibious landings of troops. They are considered enlisted personnel in the military organization.


The usual duties and responsibilities of Quartermasters and boat operators in the military organization include:

• Spearhead in directing the boat’s speed during navigation

• Use weather report equipments to identify weather conditions necessary for safe navigations

• Navigate tug boats when towing large vessels and docking barges

• Navigate amphibious crafts when troops are landing for specific missions

• Conduct regular maintenance on deck equipment and boats

• Record ship activities especially during missions ans other important events

Ideal traits

The field of study which is helpful in this kind of job in the military includes mathematics and other related subjects. Other helpful attributes also include:

• Excellent skills in reading maps as well as the ability to follow directions requiring details

• Excellent skills in dealing with mathematical formulas

• Enthusiasm in navigation and sailing

Training opportunities

• Basic procedures in dealing with boats and other sea crafts

Work atmosphere

The Quartermasters and boat operators in the military work in boats in all weather conditions. While not in boats they also work in decks and conduct repairs of small vessels. They also travel in other military installations when the need arises.

The civilian Quartermasters and boat operators work in shipping companies, fishing vessels, ferries, cruise lines and in other fish canning companies. Their duties and functions are only the same with that of the military.
